Modern life is stressful. Between messages, notifications, news headlines and work deadlines – there’s never a break. This increases mental exhaustion with each passing day. You could put forward a case for putting your phone down and switching off your TV more often, but that’s easier said than done. We crave entertainment, in any form we can get it. So sometimes, a more effective way to calm our mind is by giving it a fun distraction.

Puzzles do exactly that.

Puzzles give your brain a clear task. There’s a question in front of you that you need to answer. It’s something interesting and entertaining to focus on that’s not life-altering. Completing one brings you joy, but if you can’t manage it – nothing bad happens. This is in stark contrast to most decisions we make on a daily basis.

In many ways, puzzle solving is akin to meditation. Your mind is absorbed in a single activity, and not bogged down by the stresses of reality. You’re not focusing on problems or responsibilities, but rather on a singular task in front of you. One designed solely for your enjoyment.

Books like sudoku, word searches, cryptograms, etc. are all designed to keep your mind active – but they don’t necessarily have to be difficult (unless you choose them to be). Many people have even turned to adult coloring books as a way to occupy their brains without needing to overthink in the least.

In a world where everything feels rushed and overly complicated, it’s nice to focus on simpler things. It’s comforting to take on a task that has set boundaries, set answers, and can be completed at your own pace. No rushing, no stress, no consequences.

Not everything needs to be about productivity or competition. Sometimes, the best parts of life are sitting down with a nice cup of tea, opening a puzzle book and spending some time working through a challenge that’s only there for your own curiosity.
